About Legal Aid

Civil legal aid helps ensure fairness in the justice system for low-income residents. Civil legal aid organizations provide legal help to veterans, older adults, Native Americans, homeowners, renters, families with children, individuals who are ill or disabled, survivors of domestic violence, and work for immigrants’ safety and rights.

CIVIL LEGAL AID IS A COMBINATION OF SERVICES AND RESOURCES INCLUDING:

  • Legal assistance and representation
  • Self-help centers
  • Free-legal clinics and pro-bono assistance
  • Community educational sessions on legal topics
  • Access to web-based information

Legal aid programs also help thousands of additional people avoid legal problems or keep problems from getting worse by providing information on websites, conducting community educational sessions on legal topics, and training staff from other human service nonprofits on identifying legal issues where assistance is available. All of these services help preserve and protect a client’s livelihood, health, and family.

Each year, Michigan legal aid programs help approximately 55,000 families, however, they do not have the resources to represent everyone who qualifies and needs help. The ATJ Campaign will help strengthen access to legal protections for Michigan’s most vulnerable populations.
