Post: Consumer Rights

A couple contacted legal aid for help securing a proper healthcare plan for their two sons under the Affordable Care Act. They own a small business, and when they attempted to apply for health insurance, their two boys were placed on a more expensive plan because the caseworker had a difficult time determining how to calculate their income. Legal aid filed a request for an administrative hearing. After some research, it was apparent that the Department of Health and Human Services’ training materials included an incorrect policy for self-employed individuals.  Subsequently, both boys were retroactively enrolled in a better plan. Thanks to legal aid’s intervention, not only did the family get the correct coverage, but now an updated policy and training materials at DHHS will ensure self-employed applicants have access to more affordable health care.
