Post: Safety

A domestic violence shelter called Legal Aid to help a woman who had been released to the shelter from the hospital. The woman, originally from Sudan, had entered the United States on a fiancé visa and a few days later married her U.S. citizen husband. The marriage was happy until the husband began lying to the woman and refused to add her to his health insurance or complete the paperwork necessary for her green card. Then, his ex-wife and their children moved into the house. The husband proceeded to physically assault her. When the woman tried to leave, her husband and the ex-wife broke the woman’s phone and locked her in a room for over twenty-four hours. Legal Aid was able to work with a pro bono attorney to get the client a green card and new housing. The woman is now living in a home free of violence, working to support herself, and has started GED classes.
