Legal aid helped a struggling older adult with an unlawfully charged medical bill. In 2015, she had fallen and hospitalized. At the time of admission, the client gave both her Medicaid and supplemental private insurance information. Nevertheless, upon discharge from the hospital she received bills totaling nearly $14,000.
The client attempted to self-advocate, but after three years had not been able to resolve the situation herself and turned to legal aid for help. Legal aid asked the hospital numerous times for proof that the health insurances had been billed and the requests were ignored. After informing the legal department of intent to pursue legal action, the hospital issued an account statement reflecting a $0 balance. The hospital had failed to bill insurance previously. The client was incredibly grateful for legal aid’s assistance in solving this issue.
