Post: Housing

A client came to legal aid facing forfeiture of a land contract and eviction from his home. He had lost his job and fallen behind on payments. He had paid a significant downpayment, invested in repairs and improvement, paid taxes, and had a long history of paying his monthly payments with a high interest rate. He stood to lose not only substantial equity, but also the home he had lived in for many years. Legal aid helped him respond to the court case and to seek out other assistance that was available to him. They helped him open a filing with the Michigan Homeowners Assistance Fund where he was able to secure funding for the delinquent payments, and they directed him to a non-profit revolving loan fund to refinance his balance from the predatory lender.
