A client, who was Native American, wanted to purchase a home in the neighborhood where he spent his childhood. He did not have the resources to purchase the home outright, but he did have enough money for a down payment. The client’s tribe had a financial assistance programs and the client was having difficulty accessing the assistance. To help find the best option for the client, legal aid reviewed the tribal program polices and determined that the client could access a large amount of the funds upfront for lump sum payment. Legal aid drafted a purchase agreement and the tribe was able to make the down payment. The client was then able to pay the remaining balance to purchase the home. Thanks to legal aid, the client now owns his own home in his childhood neighborhood.
