Post: Income Maintenance

A client contacted legal aid because the Social Security Administration had terminated her social security benefits and Medicare.  The client had a heart condition requiring daily medication that was unaffordable without insurance. It was thus vital to get the Medicare reinstated swiftly to avoid life-threatening complications. Legal aid met with the local Social Security office and found that the alleged over-payment was caused because she had earnings in one month that were sixty cents over the limit, however, it discovered that the sixty cents was offset by pharmacy bills and not, in fact, an over-payment.  The benefits had been terminated due to a glitch in their system had created an automatic shut-off of benefits. Restarting the client’s Medicare would have normally taken up to three months, but legal aid was able to get the process expedited. The client’s benefits and Medicare were reinstated within two weeks.
