Legal Aid helped a pregnant single mother facing an imminent eviction after her land contract was forfeited. She was working a fulltime minimum wage job and struggling to make ends meet. She had entered a predatory land contract to purchase her home and had made monthly payments for 3.5 years. The compounded unpaid interest, investor tax rate, and required insurance resulted in only $10,000 of her $31,000 in payments being applied to the purchase price. Legal Aid helped negotiate a contract buyout and connected her to a nonprofit lender. Because of her payment history, she was able to obtain a 0% interest rate. The eviction order was vacated and she was able to keep her home.
